You’re Responsible!

You’re Responsible!

One thing that many people find intimidating when it comes to leading a team and being the boss, is making decisions. They’re afraid they’ll get it wrong and look stupid.

But the thing is…

Leading your team is all about making decisions and choices.

Don’t be afraid to make decisions. Even deciding not to decide is a decision in itself!

Making a decision on behalf of your team is not a difficult or as nerve-wracking as you might imagine. Obviously, some decisions are easier than others, but the principle behind each and every one is the same.

First of all, you’ll need to make sure of the facts involved – the process isn’t called an “informed decision” for nothing. Gather as much information as you can. Then explore your options and investigate any alternatives. Hypothesize about what the likely outcome of each scenario is likely to be. Finally, choose the option most likely to give you the outcome you desire.

Accept that you won’t always get it right every time (nobody’s perfect), and it’s always good to have a “Plan B” in reserve just in case.

Once you’ve made the decision, stick with it – unless it’s obviously wrong, in which case you’ll fall back onto Plan B. There’s nothing more frustrating for team members than a leader who changes his/her mind like the wind.

Have the courage to carry out your own actions and lead by example. Take responsibility for your team’s actions, too. Don’t try and shift the blame off to someone else. If you’re in charge, then just like Harry Truman, the buck stops with you.

The more practice and experience you have, the more often you’ll make the right decision.
