Circumstances make it sometimes hard or impossible to go to the gym or train at dedicated venues. For some people it’s the lack of time, for some it’s about the crowded parks or gyms, and for others, it’s just easier to start learning to work out in the comfort of their own home.
At the time being, due to the current situation the whole planet is facing, training at home has become the only solution for those who want to keep exercising or for those who are just starting to focus on this aspect. For most people, the main problem in practicing physical exercise is finding motivation, either motivation to start training or to continue doing so regularly. So the question remains: “How do you find the motivation to work out in the comfort of your home?”
A study published in the Journal of Sport Behaviour, vol. 16, no. 3, “Differences in Motivation for Sport and Exercise and their Relations with Participation and Mental Health”,mentions some of the reasons why people start doing sports; some of them include personal satisfaction, tension release, sense of achievement and health improvement for adults and for young people, fun and challenge are mentioned. So, what if you could transform working out at home in something that helps you feel good about yourself, look better, achieve important goals, and is, overall, a nice activity? It is completely possible.
Firstly, you should find the perfect spot to exercise, in the house, of course. Not everybody lives alone and not everybody has a lot of space to practice any kind of moves. Still, that problem can be solved. Choose a place in the house where you are the least disturbed and where you can use at least the size of one fitness mat. Think of the crowded aerobics studios at the gym. Sometimes the space between mats is less than one inch, so if all those people can train nice and safe, so can you.
After finding the perfect spot to train, keep in mind that to find and maintain the motivation you need to transform exercising into something that let’s not say you love, but at least, for start, you don’t hate. To not hate it, you must do it right, so that you don’t suffer any injuries. Always, but always, warm-up before practice and stretch afterward. You can find easy videos and pictures that teach you how to do it online or better, you can always ask a professional for help. You can do it online or by the phone if you can’t do it in person.
But, what can you do to start loving it? Make it fun. Think about the type of exercise that suits you best: maybe you like cardio, like dancing or rope jumping or maybe you like to take things slow and you’re into yoga and pilates more. If you don’t yet know, you’ve got plenty of time to find out: try searching for different types of trainings online and start testing them. Don’t forget to always look for practices that fit your level: beginner, intermediate, or advanced.
Training at home should not follow a different approach than how you normally train and should always fit your personality. Music is also important. Try to associate working out with positive vibes by training while listening to your favorite jams.
What other things help gain and maintain motivation? Result. Focus on realistic goals, thatwill make you want to keep going, even when you feel the laziest. For example, maybe you will not lose 2 kilos in one month, but what if you’d start by being able to do 15 push-ups and after two weeks of training you’ll be able to do 30? This is also a result. And it is an amazing one. Focus on small steps and take into consideration every small sign that shows you how your body is changing for the best.
At the end of the day, motivation is different for each of us, but, what is vital in staying motivated are real goals that fit your needs and desires. For some might be having a fit body, staying healthy and develop strength and for others may be doing something that like, shaking off the stress of the day and have some fun.
